"Safety Glass In Your Automobile"

The safety glass in your auto is designed to protect passengers in the event of an accident.

Two types of safety glass are utilized in the auto glass industry are:

   Laminated Safety Glass ---- Windshields.

  • Consists of a double layer of glass, with a thin sheet of vinyl in between.

  • Lamination occurs by applying heat and pressure to the three layers in an autoclave.

  • Upon impact, the broken pieces adhere to the vinyl inner lining, allowing no penetration.

  • Laminated safety glass makes "going through the windshield" almost impossible.

Tempered Safety Glass ---- Side and Back Windows.

  • It's called tempered because the glass has been through a special heated then quickly cooled process.

  • Tempering makes glass 5 to 10 times stronger than non tempered, raw glass of the same thickness.

  • Upon sudden impact, tempered safety glass simply disintegrates into dull-edged pebbles.

  • With tempered safety glass there are no large, jagged pieces of glass to seriously or fatally injure the driver or passengers.
